5 tricks to keep a good dental health

23 November 2016 - Dentals Tricks

How to prevent cavities and gum diseases? How to have a fresh breath and keep one’s teeth white? At Centre Dentaire Daneault in Sainte-Thérèse, our team knows all the tricks to help you keep your mouth clean and healthy. Read on to find out!

1. Brushing

Using a toothbrush with soft bristles and fluoride toothpaste, brush your teeth for 2 minutes, at least twice a day. Insist on molars, since cavities most often occur in the areas difficult to reach.

2. Flossing and Tong Cleaning

Forgetting to use dental floss equals neglecting to clean more than 1/3rd of the teeth’s surfaces. So, take on the habit of cleaning out the food residues stuck between your teeth once a day, preferably in the evening. If you haven’t done it already, start using a tong-cleaner; this instrument helps eliminating lots of bacteria that cause bad breath, among other problems.

3. Nutrition

Very acid or sweet foods weaken dental enamel. Keep sweets for special occasions and brush your teeth as soon as possible after eating them. To preserve the whiteness of your teeth, avoid substances that will stain them, such as coffee, red wine, tea or tobacco.

4. Protection

Chewing hard-to-bite foods (sweets, ice cubes and so on) is harmful for the teeth, as they provoke small fissures. Moreover, bruxism (teeth grinding) and sports where the risk of impacts on the jaws is high (football, hockey, basketball, etc.) tend to increase oral and dental injuries. If one of these situations applies to you, consult a dentist to get a mouth splint against bruxism or a customized mouth guard for your activities.

5. Professional Examination

The Canadian Dental Association recommends having your teeth examined and cleaned at a dental clinic every 6 months (or earlier if need be). This way, problems can be detected before they become important.
