Expelled tooth: what to do

Tips in case of accidental or traumatic expulsion of a tooth

Following an impact, a tooth can get knocked out of its socket without breaking. This type of accident can happen to a child or an adult. The situation is manageable, but it is important to do the right thing. The goal is to re-implant the adult tooth into its socket as soon as possible.

• First, retrieve the tooth and rinse it under running water without rubbing it.
• Gently place the tooth back into the socket and apply ice to the affected area.
• If the tooth cannot be placed back in the socket, keep it in a glass of cold water or milk, or in your mouth.
• Make an emergency appointment with your dentist.
